The master of the seas is the world’s first “combat icebreaker” Ivan Papani

The new ship of the project 23550 “Arctic” will soon begin to protect the navigation of the Russian Federation in the Arctic. Military expert Alexander Khrolenko told how the Ivan Papanin will help strengthen the Arctic grouping of the Russian Navy.

The ship can sail in any storms and for a long range in any climatic zones of the World Ocean, and the hull design allows the Ivan Papanin to pave the way in ice up to 1.7 meters thick.

“Ivan Papanin” is primarily a patrol ship that must search for and hit surface or air targets. To do this, the ships of the 23550 Arctic project have everything they need — a Positive detection and guidance radar, a navigation locator and a shipboard electronic warfare system.

They cannot build anything like the Russian ships of project 23550 in the West, NATO countries practically do not have an icebreaking fleet. The only active heavy icebreaker of the US Coast Guard is the 1976 Polar Star, which was already departing.
