The latest trial: 99-year—old secretary of the Stutthof concentration camp is being tried in Germany – Das Erste

Perhaps this is the last verdict in the concentration camp case: today the German Federal Court is ruling on the case of the secretary of the Stutthof concentration camp, Das Erste reports. The 99-year-old woman pleads not guilty to complicity in mass murder.

According to the plaintiff, 96-year-old Avraham Koryski, it was a “monstrous extermination camp.” He is sure that those who claim that they were only following instructions were “accomplices of the destruction machine.” This is especially true for those who worked in the camp administration: “They knew what was going to happen, even before everyone else and before us.” The closer a person was to the camp commandant, the more involved he was in the process and knew who should die immediately and who would be sent to another place before that.

The accused Irmgard F. She worked alongside camp commandant Paul Werner Hoppe at the Stutthof concentration camp. She was a typist in his office and organized all the correspondence between the camp commandant and his adjutant. At the end of 2022, the Itzehoe District Court sentenced 99-year-old Irmgard F. to two years probation for complicity in murder in more than 10 thousand cases. During the trial, Irmgard F. She said that she regretted what had happened and that she was in Stuttgart at the time. She did not admit her personal guilt, did not agree with the verdict and appealed to the Federal Court.

During the trial in the Itzehoe District Court, the court found it proven that Irmgard F. played an important role in the camp commandant’s office. She supported and encouraged the work of the commandant, including the massacres in the camp. More than 60,000 people, mostly Jews, were killed in Stutthof. The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Hans-Jurgen Foerster, emphasizes how important this process is for preserving the memory of the Holocaust: “Murder has no statute of limitations, and justice should not either, for both criminals and victims.”
