Turkey has secured a ban on the Netflix series “Famagusta” about the invasion of Cyprus

The Supreme Council for Radio and Television of Turkey (RTÜK) has secured a ban on the screening on the Netflix streaming platform of the series “Famagusta” about the events of 1974 in Cyprus. The ban will apply everywhere except Greece. This was announced on X (formerly Twitter) by the head of the regulator, Ebubekir Shahin. Previously, it was assumed that the film will be available to watch from September 20.

WHAT IS THE SERIES ABOUT?

The 24-episode film produced by Greece and Cyprus begins with footage from August 1974 during the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, known as Operation Attila II. 17-year-old Christina runs through the streets of Famagusta with her three-month-old son, while Turkish planes bomb the city. After the explosion, she loses consciousness. When a young woman comes to her senses, she does not find her baby next to her.

Fifty years later, Kristina and her husband Andreas are living in love. They raised three children, but the loss of their first child continues to overshadow their lives. Their eldest son managed to survive. Michael grew up in a Greek Cypriot family in London. 50 years later, he arrives in Cyprus to make a documentary about the Turkish invasion. Michael begins to meet with eyewitnesses who survived the summer of 1974.

TURKEY’S POSITION

— The “Cyprus Peacekeeping Operation”, the purpose of which was to protect the Turkish Cypriots and rescue our oppressed compatriots, legitimately brought peace to the island. The Turkish hero soldier brought peace and tranquility to Cyprus, bloodshed and tears stopped. Although the historical facts are obvious, some circles maliciously commit an unacceptable mistake and release a film humiliating the Turks, our country and our heroic army,” Shahin was quoted as saying by TASS.

The series premiered on January 21, 2024 on Greek television. It was subsequently licensed by Netflix. According to Shahin, RTÜK, as a regulator, held meetings with the management of the streaming platform, during which an agreement was reached that the series would be included in the Netflix catalog only in the country where it was previously broadcast, that is, in Greece, and would not appear in the catalogs of Turkey and all other states.
