The Cypriot film Animal is nominated for the EU Film Award

The film Animal, co-produced by Cypriots, was among the five nominees for the LUX 2025 European Film Award.

The five nominated films were announced by the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education, Nila Riel. The directors of five films or their representatives were also present.

The film Animal directed by Sofia Exarchu was produced by Greece, Cyprus, Austria, Romania and Bulgaria. It covers the topics of labor rights, tourism, youth and intergenerational relations.

Among the other nominees were paintings: Dahomey, Flow, Intercepted and Julie Keep Quiet.

It is worth noting that the films shortlisted for the LUX Prize are selected by a jury consisting of film professionals from all EU member states. This year, European cinema “reflects the problems and hopes of our society.” The finalists of the year, each in their own way, demonstrate the rich diversity of the world of cinema.

“They offer compelling points of view on topical issues such as women’s rights, climate change, our history and the war in Ukraine,” Riehl said, adding that they offer us to look at the world through other prisms.
