Cyprus parliament failed to gain the necessary majority

for a change in the Constitution that would allow greater wiretapping capabilities in state security cases.

The discussion takes place against the backdrop of a tense situation in the Middle East. The authorities talk about the growth of threats – from terrorism to organized crime – and believe that the state needs additional tools to respond.

MPs debated the amendment for more than two hours at an emergency meeting of parliament’s legal affairs committee on Friday. She would allow the attorney general to allow the Cyprus Intelligence Service to wiretap in writing in cases related to state security.

However, it was not possible to collect 38 votes – two-thirds of the parliament necessary to change the Constitution.
