On April 16, 2026, the House of Representatives of Cyprus approved a law regulating the use of dash cams in vehicles. Now records from such devices can serve as evidence in court, subject to the established rules. Philenews writes about this.
For which cars is the new law introduced?
The law applies to:
private cars,
professional vehicles,
public sector vehicles,
public transport.
When will the camera be activated and what will it record?
DVR frames will have legal force in two cases:
in case of a road accident – recording 10 seconds before the accident and 10 seconds after it;
in case of criminal acts or intentional damage to property.
Data can only be used on a court order. Control over compliance with privacy rules will be carried out by the Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data.
Why was this law necessary?
Until now, Cyprus did not have clear legal regulation of the use of DVRs, although thousands of cars are already equipped with such devices. The new law closes this gap and allows the use of records in court proceedings, primarily in cases of road accidents.
What will happen next with the law?
After adoption by parliament, the law is sent for signature to the President of the Republic of Cyprus. The head of state must approve it or return it for revision within 15 days. After signing, the law will be published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus and will enter into force.
How did MPs vote?
The bill was supported by 19 deputies, 16 voted against, one abstained. The AKEL party opposed, citing the risks of excessive monitoring on the roads.
What does this mean for drivers?
From the moment the law comes into force, the video from the car recorder can be used as official evidence in court. This can simplify the analysis of controversial accidents and help establish the real circumstances of the incident.
The current text of the law after publication will be available on the portal of the official gazette: Government Printing Office
