Cyprus’s new parliament has 11 women: all-time high

As a result of the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2026, 11 women deputies were elected to the House of Representatives of Cyprus. This is a record figure for the country: in the parliament elected in 2021, there were only eight women (14.3%), and the previous maximum, taking into account substitutions during the cadence, was 12 deputies. Women now took 19.6% of the 56 seats.

Despite the record, Cyprus continues to lag noticeably behind the EU average of 33.6%. In 2025, the republic had the lowest proportion of women in the national parliament among all EU countries. In the current campaign, 224 women were declared among the candidates – 29.7% of the total, against 160 (24.3%) in the 2021 elections.
