Cyprus has the smallest number of female MPs in the EU

According to a recent study by Eurostat, only 14.3% of MPs in the Cypriot government are women, which places Cyprus in last place among all EU countries.

Hungary took the penultimate position (14.6%), only slightly ahead of Cyprus, followed by Romania (19.5%).

The highest proportion of female representatives is recorded in the Nordic countries of the EU. Sweden ranked first with an index of 45.6%, followed by Finland with an index of 45.5% and Denmark with an index of 44.7%.

On average, the share of women in EU national parliaments rose to 33.4% in 2024, 5.6% more than in 2014.

At the government level, the figures have risen even further: 35.1% of women hold positions in the national government, compared with 27.7% in 2014.

Finland ranks first in the EU ranking with a percentage of women in 60% of government members. Meanwhile, in Hungary, the share of women’s participation in government is zero.
