Budapest and Bratislava have requested consultations with Kiev through the mediation of the European Commission in connection with the suspension of Ukraine’s transit of Russian oil, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.

The fuel situation has become critical for Hungary and Slovakia after Kiev tightened sanctions against Lukoil last month, effectively banning oil transit through Ukraine. Peter Szijjarto called Kiev’s decision to stop transit hostile, especially given Ukraine’s import of electricity from Hungary.

“If Kiev cannot be persuaded to resume oil transit, Europe will have the right not to comply with the clauses of the Association agreement with the EU,” Szijjarto stressed.
