In Europe and the United States, dozens of yachts of Russian oligarchs were arrested after the start of the SVO. But two years later, most of them have not been sold at auctions, but continue to stand in ports, writes the Financial Times.
At the same time, Western countries have to bear the costs of maintaining yachts and their safety, because squatters are constantly trying to get there.
Some are worth $300 million, such as the Amadea superyacht, which was arrested by the American authorities in Fiji back in 2022. In the United States, they say that it belongs to businessman Suleiman Kerimov. The monthly maintenance of such a boat costs the US government $740 thousand per month, or almost $9 million per year.
Lawyers who work for Russian businessmen claim that the seizure of yachts is an act of piracy, and they cannot be sold at auction. But the American authorities are so eager to do this in order to transfer the money to Ukraine as soon as possible.
