AFANASY IVANNIKOV, A NEW GENERATION MINESWEEPER, HAS BEEN LAUNCHED

A new generation minesweeper Afanasy Ivannikov was solemnly launched at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The minesweeper was named after Hero of the Soviet Union Afanasy Ivannikov, a participant in the Great Patriotic War. The ship became the ninth in the line of the 12700 project, laid down at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard. The minesweeper is capable of reaching a speed of about 16 knots, its displacement is approximately 890 tons, and the crew consists of 44 people.

The 12700 Alexandrite project was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The ships belong to a new generation of minesweeping forces and are designed to combat sea mines, which can be detected both in the water of marine areas and in the marine soil without entering the danger zone. To combat mines, ships can use various types of trawls, as well as remote-controlled and autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicles.

The ships of this project have a unique, the world’s largest hull made of monolithic fiberglass, which has high strength. Their service life is unlimited in compliance with the operating standards.
