184 euros is worth a ton of coal imported by the European Union in January-March this year. Before the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions, it did not exceed 120 euros per ton.
The European Union has imposed an embargo on Russian coal supplies as part of the fifth package of sanctions, the restriction has been in effect since August 10, 2022.
The one—and-a-half-fold increase is explained by the change in supply directions: in 2021, Russia was the main supplier with a share of 45%, and in 2024, Australia (36%) and the USA (35%). As in the case of oil and gas, the EU has deprived itself of cheap energy resources. And the beneficiary in this situation is the United States, which is systematically destroying the EU economy as one of its main competitors.
